Dark Eldar: Nemesis part 1 – Imperial Guard

Dark Eldar: Nemesis part 1 – Imperial Guard

So let’s face it Dark Eldar had some of the more extreme match ups in 40k ranging from the slaughter fest that was tyranids and then the white flag waving games against imperial guard. So I thought I’d go into these matchups and see whats changed. Is the same nemesis facing me across the battlefield? Or have new armies come to the fore?

I’m gunna have a look at the ultimate anti dark eldar army, imperial guard….. So what’s changed?

Tournament Gamers Painting Masterclass 5: James Clarke – Plague Marines/Daemons

Tournament Gamers Painting Masterclass 5: James Clarke – Plague Marines/Daemons

Happy Christmas and welcome to a festive Masterclass! In this series so far we’ve already seen Paul Scott’s fantastic Plague Marine army. So after having a look round for armies to focus on I asked on the Warhammer forum who had won the best painted army at the warlords GT. To my surprise the winner was yet another Plague marine army (with some daemon allies ofc!) This time James Clarke put his paintbrush to models and came up with a brilliant army and it is here for you! Enjoy James story and his beautiful models

Dark Eldar: Forge World

Dark Eldar: Forge World

Forge world. A massive controversy in the game currently. Should tournaments use it? Should they ban it? Should they restrict it? It’s an odd topic and we go into it on one of our next podcasts.
But if it was allowed, what would be an option for me? Are there any hidden gems in the bowls of forge world?

I’ll take a look at the options and decide whether these will enhance my army.

Forge world: the basics

So i'm currently assessing these units based on my current army. I’ll say what I’d be replacing and how it would work in the army. Units normally allowed are those with a forge world approved logo.
I’ll have a look at both Eldar and Dark Eldar as well!

Tournament Gamers Painting Masterclass 4: James Karch – Fire Hawks

Tournament Gamers Painting Masterclass 4: James Karch – Fire Hawks

James has been a tournament player for a while now and if you a warhammer forum or warseer forum goer you will see him by the name Spikeyjames. I came across this current army when we crossed swords at the second GT heat in Brighton. Now even though dice luck totally failed him. (One Ravager destroying 3 land speeders in one shooting phase comes to mind!) Our game was very pleasant and half way through it was announced that he had been voted for best painted army and thus was through to the final! Good Luck to you James in the final and here is James’ story.

Rupert's Deffwing army.

Hello there ladies and gents, it is perhaps about time I actually wrote an article for the blog rather than just do the podcasty stuff so I thought I would show you my Ork Deffwing army which I used extensively during the last year of 5th edition!

I had mixed success with the army, initially I didn't do particularly well but once I got used to the playstyle I racked up some pretty decent results with a top 10 at Reading Starsmash, top 10 at X-Legion, top 5 at Brighton Warlords and a 3rd place finish at Aldershot 'ardboyz.

This army was made just after the Dark Angel book had been FAQed (sp) so that they got proper storm shields and proper cyclone missile launchers, I figured I'd take a ton of terminators and then add in predators so as to maintain the resilient theme and to deny the enemy any easy kill points.

Dark Eldar: Eldar Allies

Dark Eldar: Eldar Allies

Allies are a huge part of the game and as you can tell I’m fully utilising this part of the game by including Eldrad into the army. It does kinda seem odd however that I only have 4 Eldar models in the army....

So should I use anything else in the Eldar Codex? A good question and a question I shall answer now.

I’m ofc assuming I retain the two units I’m using now. Question is can I add to my army with further Eldar forces?

Tournament Gamers Painting Masterclass 3: Paul Scott – Plague Marines

I’m not going to sit here and tell you how well I know Paul. Fact is we never crossed paths before him living in the north and myself living in the south. However when I was looking at the Heat 1 results from the GT I saw this huge Plague Marine Staring at me! Wondering what it was I came across Paul’s army and much to my own delight saw he was a tournament gamer and took the top spot for painting at Heat 1! So i contacted him and asked him about his army and to write about himself. Without further ado this is his story!

Dark Eldar: The Infantry Revolution

Dark Eldar: The Infantry Revolution

Mech is dead….. LONG LIVE INFANTRY!!! Apparently…. Well not for me just yet but this blog will look into the Dark Eldar On foot infantry options that seem to be appearing everywhere at tournaments atm. These so called Deathstars seem to be multiplying at a ferocious speed so I’ll have a go at figuring how to join the party. I’ll be looking at my Eldar Allies as well to see if there’s any big blocky units in there to use… so without further ado let’s see where this revolution came from.

Dark Mechanicus (Unit Review and Army Shot)

I’ve now had time to reflect on the last 2 tournaments, the way I played what worked and what didn’t so well and also to think about my own play style. So what I will do is run through the army I took to the tournaments and rate the unit and also my application of those units.

Ratings as followed

(++) Awesome a must include in the future/ Milked it for all its worth
(+) Decent must be considered for future projects / I used it well
(=) OK
(-) Crap unit / I used it like a chump
(--) What was I f%*&ing thinking including this.

Dark Mechanicus (Tornament and Painting Update)

Firstly I must apologise for taking my sweet time over getting another post up here. 2 tournaments in 2 weekends and the associated painting burnt me out for a week or so but I’m back and feeling good.

Review of tournaments’

Painting...
So this was the main driver behind the Dark Mechanicus army, I like to play with nicely painted toys. At the Brighton gt heat 2, I qualified as one of the top 5 best armies placing second behind a very nicely painted Necron army with grey knight allies. At Mayhem I managed to fight off competition from some lovely armies to take home the trophy for best army which had eluded me last year. Overall this was very successful with lots of interest in the army, and will inspire me to continue on with this project.

Podcast Episode 5 - UK 40K GT Heat 2 - Brighton

Hello ladies and gents, this podcast we bring you a roundup of the recent UK 40K GT Heat 2 which was run by the marvelous Brighton Warlords at Ye Olde King and Queen Brighton!

We are proud to say that we survived a weekend of gaming, banter and Mr Happy Happy Joy Joy himself at the pub!

Hidden Gems of the Chaos Codex

While preparing for both our upcoming podcast on the Chaos codex and for the Iron Fist painting challenge, I have been thinking a lot about the Chaos codex's choices which slip under most peoples radar and what sort of army it is nowadays.

The conclusion I have come to is that the Chaos codex is all about punching your opponent in the face really hard on turn 2*. Why do I think that? Lets take a look at some of the units people on the Internet in general seem to be writing off.

Dark Eldar: Psykers

Dark Eldar: Psykers

Well now the tourney season is over for me and I’ve had a good 18 tournament style games I’ll air a few of my thoughts on Eldrad’s psychic powers. Now I went through Divination powers before the Brighton GT but now it’s time for me to waltz onto the telepathy powers.

Tournament Gamers Painting Masterclass 1: Matt Cook – Dark Eldar

Tournament Gamers Painting Masterclass 1: Matt Cook – Dark Eldar

This blog will be the first in a series of blogs dedicated to that rare thing. A tournament gamer with a fantastically painted army. It’s not rare to see a painter who casually games or a gamer that is great at painting but focuses on getting an army done. It is however extremely rare to see an army painted with such skill you’re guilty that they have to face your own dreary army across the battlefield and for this army to be used at several tournaments and survive the wear and tear that comes with it.

My first subject is Matt Cook. I first met Matt vaguely when I first started going to tournaments regularly. Since then I’m sad whenever I’m at a tournament and he’s not there. An amazing guy and if you play him you’ll definatly enjoy it. A silent member of team Death or Glory now, he produced this fantastic Dark Eldar army and I have invited him to tell us about it below. So without Further ado here is Mr Matt Cook.

Podcast Episode 4 - Army Transitions in 6th

Long time no hear people!

Alas I was on holiday for a month in the US of A and the rest of the guys are not as well versed in the Tech Cult.

Our latest offering concerns how we see certain armies making the transition from 5th edition to 6th edition.

We have sorted out dedicated hosting now for our podcast and should now be available on iTunes although I am Mac illiterate.

We now have an RSS feed for the podcast too, please subscribe away! http://deathorglorypodcast.podbean.com/feed/

That Guy @ Octoberfest - Space Wolves & The Blob

So I entered Octoberfest having played only a handful of 6th Edition games and none of them under  tournament condition.

Like the guys have been saying this is the big one for us - but it was hard trying to write a list for a tournament that historically is always so different to any meta generated from standard win lose draw rulebook missions.

Let me explain...

Dark Eldar: Octoberfest!

Dark Eldar: Octoberfest!

So here it is! Our favourite tourney and it didn’t disappoint. We got heavily drunk on the Saturday night. And I had plenty of great games.

A bit of background about Octoberfest. This is probably the oldest tournament on the scene at the moment. It has a unique rule set and as such to do well you need a ‘Mayhem’ army. What I mean by this is that taking just one objective isn’t enough to win well. To get full generalship marks in a game you have to take EVERY objective. Tabling an opponent doesn’t get you full points you must take the objectives. Similarly in kill points winning by 1 doesn’t help. You have to win by a lot to get the full quota of points.

Below ill briefly go through my games what I learned and I’ll give a quick review of the tourney itself. And so on with the show!

Tyranid Tournament Report - Octoberfest

Octoberfest and Mayhem run by Tolworth First Founding are the tournaments which really started it all for most of us over here at death or Glory. And to a certain extent its responsible for Death or Glory as a whole.
So time for a history lesson! These tournaments are primarily team events. Which have their own missions and scoring system, meaning that you need to win big to get the max of 20 tournament points. For the past 11 years 2 teams emerged as the regular contenders to the crown, and both have had their ups and downs as well as numerous name changes*.

GT Heat Brighton - Necrons

So all of us Death and Glory guys had a weekend down in Brighton for the GT Heat, where much fun was had and many drinks were drunk!

Preparation for the Iron Fist

With the date for the Iron Fist Painting Challenge rapidly approaching, I thought it was time that I worked out some colour schemes and see how long the painting took*... So without further ado, I present my test cultist:

Dark Eldar: The GT Heat!

Dark Eldar: The GT Heat!

So as I said last week, I went to Brighton GT this week. Below I’m going to list out how I did and things I learned. Having only played 10 games previous there were several mistakes I made against everyone so thanks for everyone’s patience! I also learned more about each army I was facing and what the Meta was looking like now.

So without further ado here was what happened!

Dark Mechanicus in 6th (Painting update The Dark Mechanic Arrives)

So with the exception of completing all the basing the army for Brighton is complete. I waited until the end to do the model for the Dark Mechanic himself. I wanted to give myself a treat at the end of finishing painting zombie Necron warriors and other units. For the back story i wanted to use one of the Dark Mechanicum Characters that is on the warhammer 40k wiki, and then bring him to life. The character Phayzarus caught my imagination with his hatred of Space marines and the idea he has rebuild his body completely to be a regenerating construct of flesh and steel.  Below I have put his history. I found this and a lot of my other info on the Dark Mechanicus on this site http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Dark_Mechanicus.

Dark Eldar: The Next Step

Dark Eldar: The Next Step

So after a relatively mixed tourney 2 weekends ago and having just watched my favourite grand prix driver get his first ever podium (GO KOBYASHI!!!) I’ll move onto talking about the changes to my list
for Brighton GT.

A little background to the tourney is that the Brighton warlords normally hold 3 tournaments a year
and, as its no restrictions, was a logical step to hold the 2nd of the 3 GT heats here. It’s held above a
pub which is great however irritatingly Brighton is pretty pricey for accommodation so no nights out!
There’s a car park opposite and it is very easily accessible. This is the first Major tournament of 6 th
for us and so with a little bit of trepidation it’s time we present my army list!

It’s important to note by the way that the meta up north seems to represent a major shift towards
infantry with guard allying with a battle brother. I have mixed feelings about this but I’ll get into that
later. But now…. Onto the show!

Dark Mechanicus in 6th (The List)

Ok so after several months of trying to decide on what to put in my list it finally happened I actually made a decision on the list and how I want it to play. I had already talked about certain units that I wanted in the list but I needed to construct the whole list. When I am list building I have a few restrictions over your normal tornie player, they are the rule of cool (exactly what it says on the tin I may want to use something for coolness factor). And model count (I like to make my army’s look nice and a bit different but this takes time so I try to limit my lists to as few models as I can).

Now I have explained my restrictions I will post my army list for the upcoming Brighton tornie.

Dark Mechanicus in 6th (Destroyer Lord)

So I had the day off work and decided to get started on my destroyer lord. I wanted him to look like my wraiths as he is going in that unit and seeing how well Kaelarr and Luke did at the weekend with these units, I was really motivated to work on him. I even managed to finish him all today so posted him. I also decided to do step by step photos of him so anyone can see how I work. This is not by any means a fully blown tutorial but if anyone wants to ask how I did any of the bits not listed in this post I will do so in the future, or answer any comments below.

The Iron Fist Painting Challenge

This year I will be taking part in the first annual Iron Fist Painting Challenge. The aim is to paint a 1750 point 40k army in 48 hours. No breaks, no respite, no mercy! KR and Coat d'Arms have sponsored the event by provide paints for all and a lovely case for the winner. The winner will be determined by a panel of judges comprised of Golden Daemon winners and GW army painters - so the bar is pretty high!

Tournament - The Relentless March of the Necrons

As Mike has already said  three of us from the blog attended The Aldershot Ardboyz tournament this weekend and I can say we had a blast. I will go through my list first of all before I talk about my games and results.

My list breaks down as follows;

Sunday 23 September 2012

Dark Eldar: The First Tourney

Dark Eldar: The First Tourney

So as I said in my previous blog I was travelling to Aldershot to take part in a small tourney there. Unfortunatly due to the organiser placing this the same weekend as games day it meant the numbers ended up relatively low. (15 people). I have to say though it is a great venue with plenty of space and good terrain and hopefully this tournament will continue to grow.

I was a bit naughty on two accounts. Firstly a number of my models were purely 3 colours (I feel ashamed!) Secondly in my previous blog I put up an army list. I made a few alterations to this after practise game 4 against Luke and helpful notes from Ken my Scottish protégé (maybe the student has become the master!). I removed the jet bikes and the sergeant on the wych units. With the points saved I added 3 units of true born in venoms. The list therefore looked like this…

Dark Mechanicus in 6th (Painting update)

So I have been doing a bit more painting and have now finished the 2 flyers. The second one is made in exactly the same way as the first but with a few different components. I have also finished off the bases. So I thought it was time I shared them with you.

Hope you enjoy.

6th Edition – Breaking the Mould

6th Edition – Breaking the Mould

Hello everyone today I’m gunna have a swift blog about the conservative nature of many a gamer. Let me explain…

As you may have read I’m a avid Dark Eldar Player. When 6th edition hit I couldn’t wait to plough into them again and do new things with my existing army. Problem was all the armies I was taking were in all intents are purposes the same as my previous attempt….. very similar to my 5th edition army.

Tuesday 11 September 2012

Necrons Do you need allies? Or forever alone?

Ok so let’s analyse the most common reasons for having allies in your army.  In 6th ed there seems to be a number of reason you would like to take allies but I think 3 reasons at high level tournament play you would need allies, these are.
+ No flyers
++ No way to kill Flyers
+++ Crap holding units

The Art of Dark Eldar: The First Attempt

The Art of Dark Eldar: The first Attempt

So it’s time I better put an army up! The below list is my first attempt at an army list. It is the army I will possibly use for the upcoming Aldershot tournament. This first attempt is a pure dark Eldar army. The reason for this being that I wanna be trying out new Dark Eldar units and abilities. I’ve had a few games against Luke the Liabilities Necrons and I’ll tell you guys how it went below.

What allies will I use I hear you cry? Well for Brighton I was thinking Imperial guard but I’ll get to that at the next blog. For Mayhem I was going to go Eldar but again I’ll get to that on a later blog.

So without further ado I give to you my first attempt!

Dark Mechanicus in 6th (Part 4 new flyer)

So I’ve been busy the last few weeks, work has been manic however I have still managed to produce a small amount of hobby to share.  Seeing as Kaelarr  has been ranting about flyers the last few weeks I felt inspired to rework my Dark Mechanicus flyers, so I will be talking about the construction and painting side of this today.
I wasn’t very happy with my original flyer shown a few weeks ago on here, it was missing something. So I set to work redesigning it to fit in better with the overall look of my army. I wanted to make it more daemon looking like my stalker (Greater Daemon of Nurgle). I found this a challenge until I remembered the blight drone from forge world, so I worked on an idea of a cross between that and a Hell blade to represent my Night Scythes.

Friday 7 September 2012

Flyers - Who is King of the skies?

So after yesterdays rant about Night Scythes and their brokenness*, who does have the best flyer? There are loads out there, but for this article we will look at the best flyer for each of the races that has them.

Necrons - Doom Scythe - Holy S**t that's a nasty gun. This flyer is king of wrecking car parks. With a S10 AP1 line weapon, it will fly on and pump that bad boy through any closely packed targets it can. If that wasn't bad enough it gets a twin linked tesla destructor - arguably one of the best guns in the game. Its a little pricey at 175 points, plus your opponent is going to learn pretty

Nightscythes - 50 Shades of Grey.... area

So, Nightscythes. You either love them* or hate them** and on the surface of it they look like the best transport in the game. But if you delve deeper the transport rules for Nightscythes do not work in 6th edition and Ima tell you why...

First off, lets look at the mechanic for destroying a transport vehicle. First up, Wrecked. The unit must disembark and be within 3" then unit must take a pinning check. After the pinning test has been taken the vehicle becomes a wreck.

Daemons in 6th Part 3 - Heavy Support and Summary

So, here we are. At the end of this long Daemonic highway full of brutal efficient killers and worthless piles of poo.* Only the heavy support choices to go and as there's only 2 options, I think it should be fairly quick...

I have generally tried to discuss each entry in the order it appears in the codex. However for Heavy Support I'm going to reverse the order and talk about Daemon Princes first**

Daemon Prince of Chaos - There is so much to talk about with this seemingly innocuous entry. At 80 points base for a WS7, S+T5 W4 model he is a bargain. I have always been a fan of running the prince naked as, for the price, I don't care if you divert

Flyers in 6th - The (not so) great debate

I was on the Warhammer 40,000 facebook group yesterday and found myself drawn into a debate about Flyers and how some people feel that they have destroyed the game.

Let me expand on that for you, as like me, your probably scratching your head in bewilderment.

This stemmed from a post where a chap had put up an army shot of his grey knights (2 Stormravens, a Landrader and some boys) saying he had just tabled his opponents Space Wolves. He immediately attracted heat from the internet masses that he was using Flyers so it was unfair and "Space Wolves have nothing to kill a flyer with"*

Lets take a look at what that statement infers and break it down. What this clearly well informed chap was saying, is that no Space Wolf units have the Skyfire USR. But, as this is the case, if someone

Daemons in 6th Part 2 - Troops and Fast Attack

Right, first off apologies for the delay in getting round to the next blog entry, but those devious Chaos Gods had other plans for me this month...

So time to talk about the mainstay of any daemonic legion, its foot soldiers.

First up, Bloodletters. For anyone who faced The Khornemower in 5th edition, you know that if a large unit of Bloodletters got to charge anything, it was going to have a bad day. In 6th edition their hellblades have gone down to AP3, which against most opponents doesn't make a lot of difference. However, they now bounce off 2+ saves and must rely on weight of wounds to do the job. But being 16 points each, naked, and having to wait a turn before getting to charge, thats not likely to happen unless you have bigger, scarier targets for the enemy to deal with. Still a solid unit and one that will see use.

The Art of Dark Eldar: Allies

The Art of Dark Eldar: Allies

Allies. You either love them or you hate them. However they are here to stay, several tournaments are in favour of them and such this is the biggest change to 40k as we know it.

A lot of odd and bizarre combinations will shake up the order of things. The combination of the two super powers of 5th Necrons and Grey Knights as well of 4th Edition Chaos and Orks.

In this edition I’m looking as Dark Eldar as the Parent Army as well as the Ally and I’ll take you through my thoughts on each pairing.

Dark Mechanicus in 6th ( Part 3 CMON and a quick list update)

CMON
Ok this is just a quick update firstly I will be putting pics of some of my Dark Mechanicus up on coolminiornot, if you are unfamiliar with this it is a website, that hosts photos of peoples models and allows you to rate and comment on them (its also great for inspiration). I thought due to the quite unique look of my army I would start to post photos on there to see how people reacted and the initial reactions to the Greater Daemon have been very positive. If you are interested in looking on there for my stuff if you search artist RichFielder (one word) you will find him and other things I have been working on in the past including some Grey Knights and Space Wolves.

Army List Update
I’m slowly closing on an army list and this is important with the GT heats and Octoberfest both coming up very soon. Necrons are one of the winners from the changes to 6th ed. This is down to allot of things but the more I play the more I think it is down to mainly 1 weapon and that is the twin linked tesla destructors. Now these were

The Art of Dark Eldar Part 3: A New Edition

The Art of Dark Eldar Part 3: A New Edition

I’m sitting here, trying to get my mind off the exam I’m due to complete tomorrow and I’ve drifted my thoughts to the fast attack and  heavy support section. For me this was the easiest choice for my army in 5th edition. Fast Attack Choices were cack (except for Hellions, but they were troops) and heavy support had basically Ravagers galore.

Dedicated transport was another one sided affair. With all my units 5 strong, who would ever choose 1 dark lance shot to 12 poisoned ones?

But in the new edition this has changed dramatically.

I’m, in this blog, going to tackle the fast attack, Dedicated Transports and heavy support choices and critique them under the new rules.

Dark Mechanicus in 6th (Part 2)

So I thought I would give people an update on my Dark Mechanicus. My army list is still under work at the moment as im always finding new tricks to throw in or new ideas to try. There are a few things I think are a must in any Necron army now and that starts with Necron warriors with the majority of tanks dying to 3 glancing hits and rapid fire weapons getting the ability to move and fire 24”  the gauss rifles just got very good in 6th. For anyone who doesn’t know, gauss weapons glance any vehicle on a natural roll of a 6 that means 3 6’s and dead vehicle in 6th. The other thing that may not be a must have but would be up there is the use of flyers. Now Necron are unique in the fact that they have flyer as dedicated transport for troops so you can get allot of them and with the night scythes putting out the 4 x s7 tesla shots they are a solid transport. I predict seeing allot of Necron lists very flyer heavy but I will start with 1 or 2 to see how they feel in my army and if I can get them to fit my theme.

That’s enough the list part and onto the creative part. A bit of background, the Dark Mechanicus have no official structure or chain of command and can often be just a single Heratek working on his own. This got me thinking if I was working for the dark gods I would need bodies to help build my evil constructs. So reading through some of the background for them I found that there were a few dark priests who experimented on humans and turned them into what I can only describe as zombies. I thought this fitted my theme perfectly so set to work constructing zombies with bionic eye lasers etc... I feel these guys have come out really well and it will spur me on to do many more of these guys maybe with more and more augmentations.

Daemons in 6th Part 1 - HQ and Elites

With the advent of 6th edition most people will certainly agree that the playing field has been levelled to quite some degree. This will no doubt shake down as time progresses and the stronger codexes emerge, but for now the Daemons are loving life. They have some of the best units in the game and their crippling weaknesses have been reduced.

So, first off is the generic rules rules for the Daemons. The Daemon rule has been changed now. Everything that is a daemon gains a 5+ invulnerable save and causes fear. This is great for things like Soul Grinders, who before were giant AV13 sitting ducks, they now get a save! Woooo!! Fear now means that a unit in combat with any Daemon unit must take a leadership test before the fight sub phase and if they fail they are reduced to WS1, quite useful against lower leadership troops, and can sometimes ruin even a high leadership models day. Unfortunately all Space Marines are immune.

Daemonic assault has also changed somewhat. With reserves arriving on a 3+ on turn 2, and then the same on turn 3 before automatically arriving turn 4 there will be very few occasions when you dont get your army on the board. But... and its a BIG but. If you dont have anything on the board... thats it, game over. So still risky...

So without further a do, Ill talk about the big lads at the front and their favoritest killing machines (HQ and Elites).

Death or Glory 40k Podcast Episode 2: Vehicles in 6th

Hey guys,

we are back with Episode 2 of our podcast, this episode is all about the changes to vehicles in 6th and we have tried to be as comprehensive as possible within the scope of a podcast
that isn't overly long!

Dark Mechanicus in 6th

Ok so it has been a while since I have posted on Death or Glory. Since that initial post my army has come to life and even made a tournament appearance before the death of 5th ed. If you wish to follow the progress of the army towards the end of 5th you can do so on thedarkmechanic.blogspot.com, however I will post most of the current models in this post as a catch up.

Something worth mentioning at this juncture is that although we at Death or Glory are a 40k tournament team, we all have different loves for the hobby, for me personally the artistic and creative side takes precedence over just being a pure WAAC gamer. With this in mind you will find my articles based more around theme, painting and conversion rather than an in depth analysis of codex’s etc...

So how would this 5th ed Dark Mechanicus army now work in 6th? The first thing I had to consider (not being from its own codex) was do I stick with using the Necron codex? With the addition of allies there may be a better way of representing the Mechanicums dark brothers. So after about a week of thought, I decided that I would stick with Necron rules and start looking to a new theme for them to allow me to change away from what I considered to be a 5th ed list the Scarab Farm.

This process is underway but not complete as of yet. However things that will now be coming into the list will be flyers, and although 6th ed may start pushing us away from vehicles a small amount I see them playing a big part in the future of my army. There is even the possibility of some Jokearo’s making an appearance along with a mini knight titan (dread knight) as I consider including Grey Knight allies.

I thought for now I would post a gallery of some of my current models to wet the appetite for any budding dark apprentices out there.

The art of Dark Eldar Part 2: a new edition - Mike Marlow

The art of Dark Eldar Part 2: a new edition

Last time I had a look into each of the Dark Eldar HQ choices and how the new rules have affected them. Today I’m looking at the Elites and Troops (including the archon’s court).

Elites and troops were probably the most important part of the dark Eldar army as this is where the Venom options came from. I always filled out elites with my arch nemesis; ‘Blasterborn’ but now this option may have become a lot more complex.

As for troops, Wychs, warriors and even hellions and wracks were all very common. Units such as Hellions that move to troops because of a choice I have left in there section. So without any further waffling….

Blood Angels - The Transition

Hey all and welcome to my first series to be covered - the mighty Blood Angels.

My favourite army through 5th edition without a doubt - these guys saw me through for an invitation to the 2012 masters. (I think i finished 17th but someone dropped out!)

The army was based on 5 units. Yes, just 5 - Here's the army list;

The Art of Dark Eldar: a new edition - Mike Marlow

The Art of Dark Eldar: a new edition
Dark Eldar. You either love 'em, or you hate them. For me I love the manoeuvrability, the weight of fire the fragility. I’m an accountant and as such I love stats and probability and this is how I play the game and as you can imagine as a result Dark Eldar are a perfect fit.
I had a lot of success with them, winning and placing in several tournaments to the point that I was invited to play at the masters in January 2012 because of that success, an honour that I politely declined.
Despite this Dark Eldar suffered. Poor against tanks, the army really suffered against Imperial Guard and to a massive extent Grey Knights arguably the best army in 5th edition.
However now 6th Edition has approached, I’m now going to explore what this actually means for my beloved dark denizens. I’m going to split this into 3 Blogs, HQ and Special Characters, The rest of the Army and my General feelings to how the army is changing. This Blog will cover the HQ section.

A New Project (Dark Mechanicus)

Dark Mechanicus

Ok, so I don’t feel it is right to start writing a blog without a bit of background to me and my hobby first. I have been a 40k player for the best part of 20 years. I like to think of myself as a well rounded hobbyist as I enjoy painting and playing in equal measure, and like to think I’m relatively good at both.
I have played just about every army going and that is where my problem usually begins. I don’t like doing the same thing over and over so I often have to come up with unique or quirky armies, to keep my hobby fresh.

A new project
After spending countless hours agonising over numerous codex’s,  I decided I wanted to do a Necron army as frankly they are awesome fun to play with and very competitive which ticks two of my three boxes. The third box, the one about looking cool, is the one they don’t quite cut in my opinion. But a lot of green stuff and  a bit of imagination and creativity can conquer anything.
